How do Shakespeare and the studied poets use literary techniques to communicate their ideas about fate?

Poets Shakespeare, Kipling and Shelley use similar techniques to show how fate works within there poems and plays e.g romeo and Juliet. The techniques they use are the structure, the iambic meter, metaphors and events (narrative). Fate is the development of events outside a person’s control, regarded as predetermined by a supernatural power. Romeo and Juliet, the play by Shakespeare, uses fate within Romeo and Juliet to show that they cant escape the path that god has set for them, and that they tried to and in the end they both in the end died. The poem of Ozymandias use fate that it is in time on how life will end at some point and you cant change it. The other poem of a song in the storm is using fate in the poem of the ocean and how it cant kill you at any moment just as in life.

The structure that is used in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the play in the prologue which tells us how the story of the play is going to happen, “A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life” this quote tells us that a a pair of lovers will take there lives and that refers to Romeo and Juliet in the play. They both fall in love and that in the end they both take there lives to be with each other in life and in the afterlife. The fact that the audience was told about what is going to happen in the play also the audience might be thinking the prologue is a trick and then at the end it happens, it show them that fate is inevitable.

Also in Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses coincidence in the play to show how fate make sure that you stay on your path, when friar john travels to deliver the letter to Romeo, he gets stuck and he doesn’t deliver the letter in time to tell romeo what is going to happen with Juliet. So Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead but shes not.

The structure of Ozymandias is that the Volta within the poem shows us that the king had a happy life and had everything he wanted in life, then it changed to sad… where he lost everything and he died. Both of these show fate because they both had a path chosen for them and that path happened, which they couldn’t escape or change.”my name is Ozymandias, king of kings: look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’ nothing beside remains.” This tells us that to look at what all he did in his life and now its all gone like fate said it would.

The structure of a song in a storm is the use of repetition within the poem it ends every versus with,  “Then welcome Fate’s discourtesy Whereby it shall be seen, etc.” Which show us that there waiting for what fate has decided for them and that it can happen at any point and they welcome when it will happen.

Shakespeare  use iambic pentameter to show that the play have the same rhythm, which is always there and never ends just like fate. Just like Romeo and Juliet in the play fate was always there even through they went there own way, but it still ended the way fate decided it to. This can be shown by a quote from the play ‘blind is his love’, and best befits the dark’, this tells us about how they found love in a place where they wouldn’t of thought they would.

In the poem Ozymandias  the iambic meter is used throughout the poem to show how time is shown for Ozymandias. this shows us how his life is from when he started till the end and that he cant escape the fate that he was set from birth that he will die, just like everyone else which is everyone fate in life, that we all die. “round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away”

The other poem a song in a storm uses iambic meter  “be well assured that on our side the abiding oceans fight, though headlong wind and heaping tide make us their sport to-night.”  Kipling uses the ocean to show that fate is control and that it can use the waves to kill them or let them reach there destination.  the iambic meter is linked because the waves in the background of the poem is the rhythm which never ends.

Shakespeare uses metaphors in Romeo and Juliet “I fear, too early, for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars, which romeo is referring to heaven and gods will. “Shall bitterly begin his fearful date With this night’s revels, and expire the term Of a despised life closed with in my breast,” this one romeo is referring to his life not just his heart and that he is putting his life in god hands.  “By some vile forfeit of untimely death.” This quote expresses how Romeo fears that his life will be shortened if he goes to the Capulet ball. Then he goes and puts his life in god hands to show that he believes in what god has planed for him. “he that hath steerage of my course, direct my sail.” Romeo is talking about he is the ship and that god is guiding him through.

Shelley Ozymandias the own poem is a metaphor. In this quote he is referring  “And on the pedestal these words appear:`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'” The statue is referring to how important and how famous he was  when he was king and younger and now that he got older it led to his downfall and his death. He wanted his life to be remembered.

Kipling uses metaphors in the poem of a song in a storm. A metaphor that he uses is  “Almost as though they leagued to whelm Our flag beneath their green” this tells us that he they think that it has a soul just like we would. Another metaphor Kipling used was “Then welcome Fate’s discourtesy” this says that fate doesn’t have courtesy, like its doesn’t care what happens, even if it kills or hurts someone.
